Weekend Tips

After last weeks successful selection of Crystal Palace as well as a win for Zamdy man, it was all in all a good weekend. This weekend there is plenty more action included the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Football:

Expect Clough to be celebrating come the final whistle
For me this week the bet is Sheffield United. I backed them in the last round to beat Aston Villa and they did at a wonderful 6-1 (SkyBet). Fulham, like Aston Villa, are struggling in the league and survival is without doubt the main aim. The weather this weekend is poor and playing away from home has never been a strong point for Fulham. This all leads to me thinking Sheffield are a great bet. SkyBet go 7/4, which although a little short is understandable. I will still be taking this one on. Nigel Clough will have them organised and ready to go whereas Fulham's commitment can be questioned.

Elsewhere a solid accumulator looks: Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton, Southampton and Brighton 3-1 (SkyBet).

Horse Racing:

Horse Racing comes from Cheltenham and Doncaster this weekend. Personally I feel there are many open races and given the ground you will need a horse who love the mud. Annie Power looks a certainty and I expect her to be at least 1/5 by the off. I will probably look to double this with another and at the moment am think Red Sherlock 7/4 at Cheltenham in the 15:00.

Impressive Federer Sets Up Quarter Final With Murray

Roger Federer has set up a Quarter Final showdown with Andy Murray after defeating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets.

Federer produced a superb display to dismantle Tsonga 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in under 2 hours. It was without doubt the best performance from the Swiss maestro for a while.

Federer kept Tsonga down for virtually the entire match and never let him get into a rhythm. What was so impressive was the serving and backhand. Federer came to the net 41 times winning 34 points, leading some to immediately call it the ‘Edberg effect’.

It is the first time since last year’s French Open that Federer has reached a Grand Slam Quarter Final. It is a repeat of the semi-final from last year which Murray prevailed in 5 sets.

Once the draw was made this quarter final match up was always a possibility however I think many may have doubted Federer presence giving his recent troubles.

The big question will be if Federer can reproduce this form and even improve for the upcoming battle with Murray. It promises to be a great match with the media portraying the victor as ‘the return of.....’. Personally I am eagerly awaiting this match and predict Federer to win in four sets.

Weekend Tips

Now it has been a while since I have done this but now feels the right time to bring it back. Plenty of Sports action this weekend and some great betting opportunities too.

Football:
For me without a shadow of a doubt the straight bet of the day is Crystal Palace to win against Stoke. Tony Pulis has done fantastically well since taking charge at Crystal Palace who are now a disciplined and organised outfit. They have proved in recent weeks their ability to make it very difficult for opponents.

Pulis' Palace the bet of the day
They are the only side down at the bottom who I feel have a little momentum. I saw enough in their performances against Manchester City and Spurs to think they have a great chance of survival. I know that seems a ridiculous comment considering they have returned to the foot of the table.  However with it being so tight down the bottom it really is not as bad as it seems. I wrote them off at the start of the season as whipping boys but Pulis is changing that and tomorrow may not be much of a spectacle for the lovers of Arsenal style football but it will be competitive.  The pressure is really on now and every week it stays tight that pressure will grow and grow on all of the sides.

Tony Pulis will greatly enjoy playing his old side and he must fancy the win. Stoke really do not impress whenever I have seen them this season.

SkyBet have Crystal Palace at the lovely price of 5/4. Personally this is one I will be on for sure.

Elsewhere in the Premier League Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool all look bolt on certainties to collect victories. 4/7 for that treble, add Crystal Palace for 13/5 accumulator.

Both Teams to Score: Reading v Bolton / Port Vale v Oldham / Sheffield United v Bradford / Preston v Coventry / Southend v Chesterfield/ Wycombe v Oxford @ 28/1 (Skybet).

Horse Racing:
Venetia Williams is having a good time of late and as a firm believer in momentum it would be unwise to oppose her. Trusted man Aiden Coleman rides both mounts at Haydock.

Zamdy Man (4/1 SkyBet) in the 2.05 at Haydock looks a good bet. Biggest danger is Nicky Henderson's Stand to Reason.

Katenko (7/2 SkyBet) in the 3.15 at Haydock. A very open race for me with no one really standing out. Should make for decent betting.

Double is 22/1 with SkyBet.

Promotion And Relegation To Return To Super League From 2015

Which two will be relegated in 2014?
Today the Rugby Football League (RFL) have announced that the clubs have agreed to the return of promotion and relegation in the Super League 2015.

As of next season the top two divisions, Super League and the Championship, will contain twelve sides splitting into three groups of 8. Therefore this season the bottom two sides will be relegated to set up the new format.

Further details of the restructuring will be revealed later this month.

So a radical new league structure that I am sure will cause a huge amount of debate from the fans. Honestly I think many will view this negatively. The idea is somewhat confusing but this is how it appears it will work.

It is believed that all of the sides in both the Super League and Championship will play each other in the traditional home and away before the league breaks into three groups of eight. Once this has happened every team will play every other in its league of eight once, with teams in the top and bottom group retaining their points from the first part of the season and those in the middle group starting from zero.

How this will then affect play-offs I do not know. It is to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Got it? Well as I said I am sure many will just see this as another poor decision from the RFL. On twitter many people have been very strong with their comments, many along the lines of the RFL is destroying the game. However many said that when the Super League began and suddenly teams such as Leeds became Leeds Rhinos but on the whole that has been a success.

Super League chairman Brian Barwick said:
"I would like to thank the clubs for their contribution to what was a very fruitful and positive meeting. The clubs were unanimous in their view that Super League should become a 12-team competition from 2015 and that there should be meaningful movement between Super League and the Championship. There was a full and frank debate about the competition structures and a commitment to support the proposed format. The Super League clubs' decision will now go before the RFL's independent board of directors for ratification next week."

The licensing idea taken from the Australian model has not worked. Period. Personally I am very happy with the return of promotion and relegation as believe it is an essential part of British sport.
However I feel the format which should have been chosen was four divisions of ten. A Super League 1&2 and Championship 1&2.  Having spoken will many in the game only 12 months ago I know that this was the preferred option.

I really hope that this new format works even if my head says it will not. For the sake of the game I think it needs to work or it will be more wasted years where greater and greater damage is being done.

Rugby League is a game which has been mishandled and mislead for many a year. We are currently facing a second consecutive year without a title sponsor. Which when the consider the quality of the game is staggering. I have to agree with Salford owner Marwan Koukash comments last week that clearly things are not working and the game is not growing the way it should be. The potential for Rugby League is huge and it is a crying shame that not more people are aware of the game nationwide. Unfortunately certain people like the way things are and like the fact it is seen as a 'northern game' played along the M62 corridor.

Ultimately the return of promotion and relegation is without doubt a positive for the game even if I am apprehensive about the way it will be implemented. I look forward to hearing further information from the RFL as to how the new format will work.

High Temperatures Cause Controversy At Australian Open

Maria Sharapova attempting to remain cool
Comedian Dylan Moran once joked that Australia was located just 3/4 of a mile from the surface of the sun. Well in this opening week of the 2014 Australian Open many of the players and fans may have felt that to be true.

Unfortunately for the tournament the opening few days have been dominated by talk of the extreme heat and not that of the actual tennis. The images that have been seen are not the ones the tournament was hoping to provide with players slumped over receiving medical attention.

Heat Map of Australia
Many people, including the players, have expressed their unhappiness at the continuation of play when temperatures have reach over a staggering 40 degrees.

The part that amazes me it that is seems the ATP do not appear to have any guidelines regarding such and occurrence.

The best quote I have heard regarding the heat was from Andy Murray. A man not usually noted for his words but his comments rang very true. He said:

“It’s definitely something that you have to look at a little bit. As much as it’s easy to say the conditions are safe, it only takes one bad thing to happen. And it looks terrible for the whole sport when people are collapsing, ball kids are collapsing, people in the stands are collapsing. That’s not great.

“I know when I went out to hit before the match, the conditions at 2.30, 3pm were very, very tough. Whether it’s safe or not, I don’t know. There’s been some issues in other sports with players having heart attacks.”

I agree with him that the reputation of the sport is on the line as this is a global event and millions around the world will tune in. As Murray points out it only takes 'one bad thing' and the whole tournament will be overshadowed.

Ivan Dodig says he feared he might die
When you have players describing it as 'inhumane' and seeing the number of retirements in the opening rounds, even from players who were winning, it is a very sorry sight.

I know the argument will be it is the same for both players and that is true however I do think that the lack of communication and understanding of the situation from the players, coaches and even tournament organisers reflects extremely badly on the sport.

From what I understand the tournament referee Wayne McEwen can suspend play on the outer courts and close the roofs on the main arenas, when the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (which takes humidity and wind factor into account) reaches a certain level. However Mr McEwen has declined to say what that temperature is. Personally I think this is wrong as it should be clear for all to see.

Furthermore the statement released  that a 'low level of humidity' had kept the conditions playable certainly raised eyebrows. Some may argue that the players are 'soft' and use just get on with playing and stop moaning amount the conditions. A point the great Roger Federer may share after he commented:
“It’s just a mental thing. If you’ve trained hard enough your entire life, and you believe you can come through it, there’s no reason [to quit]. If you can’t deal with it, you throw in the towel.”
Now even me who often has little sympathy for top sport stars disagree with this assumption. I think play should have be stopped at least a few more times than it has been, especially on the outside courts.

I hope the heat does decrease and the tennis will take the headlines as we head into what promises to be a blockbuster second week.

A side note to this would be the proposed World Cup of 2022 in Qatar. It would seem a certainty that the World Cup will be moved to Winter. This announcement which is still a while away will certainly come and the fallout will be enormous.
