Weekend Tips

After last weeks successful selection of Crystal Palace as well as a win for Zamdy man, it was all in all a good weekend. This weekend there is plenty more action included the fourth round of the FA Cup.

Football:

Expect Clough to be celebrating come the final whistle
For me this week the bet is Sheffield United. I backed them in the last round to beat Aston Villa and they did at a wonderful 6-1 (SkyBet). Fulham, like Aston Villa, are struggling in the league and survival is without doubt the main aim. The weather this weekend is poor and playing away from home has never been a strong point for Fulham. This all leads to me thinking Sheffield are a great bet. SkyBet go 7/4, which although a little short is understandable. I will still be taking this one on. Nigel Clough will have them organised and ready to go whereas Fulham's commitment can be questioned.

Elsewhere a solid accumulator looks: Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, Everton, Southampton and Brighton 3-1 (SkyBet).

Horse Racing:

Horse Racing comes from Cheltenham and Doncaster this weekend. Personally I feel there are many open races and given the ground you will need a horse who love the mud. Annie Power looks a certainty and I expect her to be at least 1/5 by the off. I will probably look to double this with another and at the moment am think Red Sherlock 7/4 at Cheltenham in the 15:00.

The Problems With The London Broncos

London embarrassed in Cup semi-final.
I have waited a few weeks after the 70-0 mauling by Wigan Warriors in the Challenge Cup semi-final to write this one as to have a serious think about the London Broncos current situation. The Broncos are bottom of the Super League massing a mighty 8 points from 24 games. Despite having a few games to go I seriously doubt this points tally will improve.

With the announcement by the RFL that the Super League will revert to a 12 team tournament from 2015, the place of the Broncos in that new set-up is very much at risk. It is no surprise that many feel that the Broncos will be removed as they have a small fanbase and a poor quality side. The 'London experiment' , as they are often referred to , would seem to have failed to produce a top Super League side.

There are many problems with the current set-up of the London Broncos and many mistakes have been made in the past, notably calling themselves Harlequins like the Union team. Firstly, and the biggest problem is the idea of identity. London as a place for a team has no identity. The city is divided into different areas, as can be seen with the football. This idea of a team 'London' just does not work. Just look at the basketball, ice hockey and American Football sides they have created. All have failed. In the Rugby Union those with London in their name actually play outside London, e.g London Irish.

This is also not helped by the constant change of home. The Broncos have moved ground so many times that the fans they may have gained whilst playing at one venue with now have to travel miles to watch them. Personally the idea of Fulham RL as it was originally was the way forward. I understand that in the current sporting climate and the financial power of the Premier League, that gaining such a partnership is almost impossible. If they were able to return to Fulham and call themselves Fulham RL the issue of identity would improve. You could also gain some of the Football fans if it is sold the right way, a long-shot it may be , but you never know. 10,000 attended they original first game at Craven Cottage when they beat Wigan back in 1980.

The third problem is the change of tactic regarding players. In the past it was mainly northerners with some australians/New Zealanders and maybe a couple of Londoners. Recently they have this dream of a team winning the Super League being full of Londoners. This does not work. The Londoners coming through the system are not yet at the level needed to compete. In the last 20 years the only one who has come through and gone on to success is Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook. One player. Kieron Dixon is another currently talked highly of however we wait to see how he turns out. You look at some of the local club sides in Yorkshire and Lancashire they are producing at least one at every age group.

I understand that the game appeal and popularity is far greater in Yorkshire and Lancashire compared with London however considering the population of 8 million I still feel they are under performing. As a result the quality of the team and its ability to compete has deteriorated for years.

They constantly talk of the terrific youth set-up and the number of children playing the game now in the capital but they just are not coming through.  At this moment the Broncos are unable to compete in the Super League. Tony Rea must look on in despair considering the players he had in the old Broncos team compared to this one.

This coming off-season is huge. They must go back to the old strategy of quality northerners with a few quality Australians/New Zealanders. They need people of experience who know the game. Far too many times this season they have looked totally lost as to what to do.

The target should be to try and bring through one/two Londoners into the main squad each year if they are good enough, as it is with some football clubs. It is the only way the Broncos can survive at present. If they do not change then next season will be like this one and they will for sure lose their Super League place.

My dream is the return of Fulham, but I know that this is as likely as Wayne Rooney signing for the Wigan Warriors. This along with the return to the  policy regarding players is the only way I can see the Broncos having a long-term and successful future.

I want Rugby League to succeed in London and the UK as it is a great game. Unfortunately the stubbornness and inverted-snobbery of this northern idea of 'our game' and the M62 corridor has stopped it's progression. The failure of the Rugby League to spread to areas such as the Midlands and Cumbria just shows it lack of ambition. I want to see a successful World Cup and hope Wembley is packed for its matches however I doubt it will be.

I live in the South-East and am a big fan of Rugby League but look on in despair at the games failures in marketing and expansion. So many mistakes have been made over the years and despite leading the way in terms of innovation with the likes of video technology and most recently ref-cam the game has fallen behind. There are many reasons for this however fundamentally many have arisen from Red Hall and the RFL.

Weekend Tips

Another Weekend, another chance for more betting. Last week I thought Sunderland would have hung on. I was disappointed with the performance and think Adam Johnson was missed. This week there is another full set of fixtures as well as Rugby League play-offs and Horse-Racing from Newbury,Newmarket,Ayr and Catterick.

Football:

For me the best value for money bet in the Premier League is  Wigan to beat Fulham at home. Fulham are notorious for their form on the road. They really are a totally different side. I was impressed with them last week and in Dimitar Berbatov's performance. He is a very good signing for them that is for sure. Although I expect Wigan who have been playing well themselves to bag the points in this one. They collapsed last week at Old Trafford however Fulham are not of that standard. SkyBet go a generous 7/5 for the Wigan win which are very tempting odds.

There are some odds-on home-win that are looking good as well. Home win double for Chelsea/West Brom @ 11/10 (SkyBet) also looks a good punt. Stoke, like Fulham, are a different side away from home and Chelsea despite playing in mid-week should have too much. Reading will have to play a lot better then they did against Tottenham if they are to get anything at West Brom. A performance I can not see coming of the level needed to worry West Brom. West Brom getting back to winning ways a great shout.

Elsewhere the most interesting clash is at St Mary's. Southampton need a result and today is a great chance. Aston Villa are a poor side and are there for the taking. The reason I would not back Saints is the defence. They have been so poor of late I would not want to put my money on them. I am leaning towards a Saints victory and they are 7/5 (SkyBet) to do that but I will leave this one alone.

Tomorrow's games are very tough to call as it really is a Super Sunday. Manchester United must be favourites to beat Liverpool and I would call a United win @13/8 (SkyBet). SkyBet go 8/5 Liverpool and 23/10 the draw. Arsenal vs Manchester City is too close to call. I think that this is the first real test for this Arsenal side who have been very impressive at the start of the season. Being at home City should pick up the points however I am not too sure. SkyBet go 8/11 City and 7/2 Arsenal although I think 14/5 draw is great odds. I will be leaving both of these alone in terms of betting however it does promies to be quite a sunday.

Best Value bet : Wigan to beat Fulham @7 /5 (SkyBet)
                          West Brom/Chelsea double @ 11/10  (SkyBet)

Long-shot of the day: 3 draws: West Ham/Sunderland, Crystal Palace/Cardiff and Ipswich/Charlton @37/1 (SkyBet)

Both teams to score: Crewe/Leyton Orient, Yeovil/Sheffield Utd, Port Vale/Gillingham and York/Cheltenham @7/1 (SkyBet)

Win Accumulator: Leeds, Crawley Town, Notts County, Southend and Wycombe @37/1 (SkyBet)

Horse-Racing:

Win bets: 2.05 Newbury --- Lay Time @11/4 (SkyBet)
2.35 Newbury --- Master of War @4/1 (SkyBet)

Each way 2.45 Newmarket --- Wellingrove @25/1 (SkyBet)
3.55 Newmarket --- Bernie the Bolt @10/1 (SkyBet)

Good luck with your bets.

Weekend Tips

The transfer deadline has come and gone and today many of those new signing will get their debuts. It will be interesting to see how they all get on. For me I am very interested in the early kick-off between West Ham and Fulham to see how Andy Carroll plays. There is no in my mind that Carroll will be a success for West Ham and I think his chances of scoring today are very good. This being said I am also looking forward to seeing Fulham and the likes of Dimitar Berbatov, however I doubt he will feature. For me he is a great signing for Fulham.

So another full set of fixtures before the two week International break as well as horse-racing from Sandown, Chester and Beverley as well as Rugby League action.

Football:

This week my single bet will be on West Ham. I watched West Ham last weekend against Swansea and quite simply they were awful. Swansea torn West Ham apart in truth, with a little help from the West Ham defence that was. However as ever with football this is another game. West Ham are usually strong at home. Upton Park is a formidable place to go. The crowd will be lively and buoyant after the recent additions. Then we have Fulham. Without doubt the more notorious bad travellers the Premier League has ever seen. Although they themselves have added some quality to their side.

Carroll set for debut today
I expect plenty of goals in this one and would not be surprised by a 3-3 scoreline. Having said that I am tipping West Ham to win this one with Carroll (right) scoring almost a cert. I have never been a fan of Sam Alladyce however he has signed some very good players during the summer. I believe he now has the squad to survive in the Premier League. The likes of Yossi Benayoun and Matt Jarvis are good Premier League players that will both score goals and create chances for others.

As for Martin Jol's Fulham, they have undergone some change this summer losing players like Moussa Dembele, Clint Dempsey and Andy Johnson. They have started the season well, thrashing Norwich and giving Manchester United a real game at Old Trafford despite ending up losing. I think the signing of Dimitar Berbatov and Hugo Rodellega add an attacking threat they will cause plenty of defences a headache. However it is in centre midfield where I feel they are lacking. This will be exploited today I feel.

So I predict Fulham's poor away record to continue today in a high scoring defeat. As a result 4/6 (SkyBet) for both teams to scores looks a great bet. On top of that West Ham are 5/4 for more booking points which again looks very very likely.

Match odds: West Ham 7/5, Fulham 15/8, Draw 23/10

Bet of the Day: West Ham at 7/5 (SkyBet) to beat Fulham.

Accumulator Wins: Leeds, Sheffield Wednesday, Crawley Town and Blackpool @29/1 (SkyBet)

Longshot of the day: 3 Draws: Swansea/Sunderland, West Brom/Everton and Wigan/Stoke @36/1 (SkyBet)

If feeling very lucky add Liverpool/Arsenal @130/1 (SkyBet)

Horse Racing:

Win bet : 2.50 @ Sandown: Master of War @ 2/1 (SkyBet)

Each Way bet: 3.05 @ Chester: Capaill Laith @20/1 (SkyBet)

Also Richard Hughes has some very good rides today and an accumulator on him would not be a bad idea.

Rugby League:
Bradford to beat Hull looks a great bet. The Bulls are on great form despite the off the field issues. Hull are already confirmed in the play-offs and see Bradford as being more committed in this one.  Bradford at @ 4/11 (Skybet). Tempting to combine with wins for Wakefield and Warrington for even money bet.

Good Luck with your bets.

Relegation Fears Become Very Real As Season Nears Its Climax

With eight games to go many Premier League teams are still at risk of relegation. Currently Wigan,West ham, Woves, Birmingham, Aston Villa, Blackburn, Blackpool, West Brom, Fulham, Newcastle United and even Sunderland are involved. None of these are safe.

Wigan have been struggling all year and are my favourites to go down. They just don't have enough to survive. The likes of Hugo Rodallega and Charles N'Zogbia are the key men and will have to produce if Wigan are to survive. They have picked up results recently however I feel that they will go down.

Ba is West Ham best hope for goals
West Ham were in trouble for a long time however have picked up dramatically and with players like Demba Ba (left), Scott Parker and Victor Obinna they have a chance to survive. Demba Ba is a player I really like and am sure many Premier League teams will want to sign him this summer. Upton Park is a very tough place to go and they will have to pick up points there and fast.

Woves are a terrific battling team and it is this that i think will see them safe. They will continue to get results and think they will make it. The likes of Kevin Doyle, Stephan Hunt and Matt Jarvis will see them safe.

Birmingham are in really danger. Poor performances have left them in a very dangerous position. They are tricky at home which is where I see there points coming from. With Nikola Zigic and the arrival of Obafemi Martins i can see them just surviving.

Asron Villa is the one who have an outside chance of going down. They have no ability to grind out results. No fighting spirit. I look at Villa I see a beaten team, no team morale or spirit. Defeat to Woves was crucial. They just don't have the players willing to battle to see them safe. The key man is Darren Bent, his goals will be key. It a bold claim and would be a real shock but for me Villa will go down. Best bet 7-1 got to be worth a punt.

Great character--Holloway
Blackpool have become many peoples second team after this season. With Ian Holloway (right) at the helm, Charlie Adam, terrific spirit and the way they play I hope they survive. They are on a poor run but I am hoping they can turn it around as they are great to have in the Premier League.

West Brom will be very close to going down however under Roy Hodgson they will just make it. Three points against Arsenal would have been huge. They are a side improving and battling.

Blackburn are the another team who for me will go down. In freefall and no sign of that ending.

Fulham will also see themselves safe. They will pick up draws that edge them towards safety. Bobby Zamora's return is key.

Newcastle are also in a dire run of form with only one win in nine. However think they will survive. They have crucial games away at Villa and Blackpool and home games against Birmingham and Woves where the safety points will come from. However they should be wary and they could easily drop back down to the championship.

Sunderland should be safe. Cannot really see them going down. Would be incredible but see them finishing 4/5 points from safety.

Prediction : Blackburn, Aston Villa, Wigan DOWN.
Is a bold claim but can see it happening.
